“Close together atop a granite ridge,”— asked sixteen of thirty-five times
Sideby side
Two women on a ridge, asked for fifteen ways and answered thirty-five times. Nobody climbed the ridge. Nobody held the camera the instructions keep describing.

What follows is the weather of a day that did not happen — a ridge nobody climbed, and a camera nobody carried.
Four ways through
None of them is the front door
- 01The weatherFive kinds of sky, a screen each. The only clock this series has.
- 02The duetOne frame, cut down the middle. The halves close as you pass.
- 03The takesEvery answer to one sentence, panning sideways past the sentence itself.
- 04The platesFourteen frames, each given the whole room, no two the same way.
Nine hours
One day on a ridge nobody climbed — point at an hour
Grey on grey
Three hours without a shadow between them. The wool does all the colour there is, and the ridge does none.

OvercastR04 — Grey on grey, no shadow
North lightR18 — Flat, even, cold
SilverR03 — The ridge reads as stone
The script
Fifteen instructions — set at the size of their own repetition
- 16×their woolen shawls in the wind, the low camera angle immortalising their unity with the stone beneath them.
- 3×the pair hold a horizon that keeps changing its mind about the weather.
- 2×the two figures read as one shape, and the lace at their collars is the only fine thing for miles.
- 2×captured from a vantage that makes the granite look like weather.
- 2×the shawls turn to ember and the air between them goes cold.
- 1×their woolen wraps lift in a gust that arrives from somewhere outside the frame.
- 1×the models find balance — weight shared between them, neither leaning nor letting go.
- 1×the models' woolen shawls are in motion, mirroring the dynamic highland air. Their focused expressions and the lace details of their dresses are prominent, with the low-angle shot emphasising their unity with the ridge beneath them.
- 1×the models are still while everything they are wearing moves.
- 1×The models are perched on the crest like something that grew there, and the wind does the rest.
- 1×The highland breeze animates the models' hair and cloth until the two of them are more motion than figure.
- 1×The camera hones in on the models as they draw close, a whirlwind of emotion in their eyes, the windswept shawls framing a tableau of movement and raw beauty amidst the highland serenity.
- 1×the models are still and close, and their breath is the only thing the frame cannot show.
- 1×the models stand shoulder to shoulder, the drop behind them left deliberately soft.
- 1×the models pose cheek to cheek, eyes closed, giving the lens nothing to meet.
Sixteen of the thirty-five answer one line. One sentence wrote half the series.
Twelve of the fifteen open by putting the two of them somewhere — side by side, close together, atop the ridge. That opening is printed once here instead of twelve times.
Two of the fifteen survive word for word. Midjourney kept only the opening of each prompt in the filename, and the remaster of 2026 dropped the filenames; the rest are reconstructions.
There wasno camera
Nearly every instruction directs one. “The low camera angle immortalises.” “Captured from a vantage that.” “The camera hones in.”
The style the machine was tuned to was the photographer’s own model work, fifteen years earlier. The camera the sentences keep describing is his.
A shotlist for a shoot that never took place. The ridge is precise about everything except where it is.
The light picks a side
Somewhere between the fourth hour and the sixth, the day decides. Nobody in the frame notices — nobody in the frame is looking.
The light picks a sidePoint at a band to stop the day there
HeatherR10 — Wool and bracken agree
First blueR05 — The only cool hour
High noonR12 — Light from above, nobody squints
The Lexicon
The handwriting of this series
- The Flesh
- Always two, and almost the same two. Cheek to cheek, eyes closed or aimed past the lens, at a horizon the instructions insisted on.
- The Fiction
- A granite ridge in a highland nobody named. Real weather, invented ground: the place is precise about everything except where it is.
- The Garment
- Wool and lace, in that order. The shawl is the third body — it moves first, it takes the light, and it is the only thing in frame that is never still.
- The Vibe
- Harmony, requested by name. Fifteen sentences ask for unity, balance and symphony; the answers are warm, close, and slightly too composed to be candid.
- The Lens
- A low angle, from below, wide enough to hold both. The instructions specify the camera in every frame. There was no camera.
- The Sound
- Wool snapping in a gale, and two voices too close to need volume.

What the instructions asked for
Golden hour is in the sentences by name. The machine kept returning to it and the ridge kept obliging, which is why it stands widest of the nine.
